Jawa is back

Yes, after 22 long years Mahindra's Classic Legends has revived the motorcycle brand that once ruled Indian roads and invoke a lot of memories.

The company has launched two new bikes the Jawa (centre) priced at Rs 1.64 lakh and the Jawa Forty Two (right) priced at Rs 1.55 lakh (Ex-showroom Delhi), on November 15. A third bike — a custom factory bobber called Perak (far left) — will be launched at a later date for Rs 1.89 lakh (Ex-showroom Delhi).

Both Jawa and Jawa Forty Two will be made available through 105 dealerships across the country early next year.

Modern power

Both bikes feature a 293cc liquid cooled single cylinder DOHC engine that produces 27bhp and 28Nm of torque. The Perak engine has a slightly higher bore and stroke taking the engine to 334 cc producing 30 bhp and 31 nm of torque. The engine is built with a near flat torque curve and generous mid-range, and also a motor strong enough to last a lifetime.

Classic looks

The engine's casing has been designed to look like the original Jawa engine. The company claims they have managed to maked it sound similar to the original Jawa. Classic Legends has taken effort to keep the original bike's details like an iconic tool box and an offset instrument pod with tiny digital display and fuel gauge and flat handlebar.

Hitting right chords of nostalgia

The engine has been built on a BS6 ready platform, the company said in a statement.

From the tuning of the fuel injection to the gearbox that completes the powertrain, the company said it believes, one will get from this engine, what one seeks in a classic.

Ride and handling

The bike weighs 170 kg and the seat height is 765 mm. Telescopic hydraulic forks do suspension duties on the front and twin gas shocks on the rear. An 18-inch front tyre comes with ABS equipped 280mm disc brake and a drum brake to stop the 17 inch rear wheel.

All the right colours

The bikes come with a double cradle frame. Coming to the paint scheme, the Jawa has three colours, black, maroon and grey while the Forty Two will be available in six colours.
