The legendary Jawa brand made a comeback to the Indian market officially last year. After the brand officially started accepting the bookings for the bikes, the online bookings had to be closed because of the overwhelming response from the market. Jawa started the deliveries of the bikes from the March-end and yet there is a huge backlog that will take months of clear up.

In an interview with Times Drive, Jawa India’s co-founder Anupam Thareja has commented on the deliveries and has said that the current backlog will be cleared only by September 2019. The slow rate of deliveries has been attributed to the slow production rate of the bikes but soon Jawa is expected to ramp up the productions and increase the capacity of the assembly lines. September is five months away and there are thousands of deliveries that the brand will need to make to clear the current backlog of pre-orders.

Jawa is yet to re-open the online bookings for the bikes in India. It is possible that once the initial pre-booked motorcycles are delivered, Jawa may start taking the online bookings again. Prospective customers can currently book the Jawa bikes by visiting the authorized Jawa dealerships across India. There are close to 100 showrooms of Jawa and more are coming up in the future. The Jawa dealerships also offer test drives for the customers.

An initial lot of the bikes will consist of the single-channel variants only. Jawa initially offered only the single-channel ABS version in the market but later updated the version with dual-channel ABS after customers demanded it. The delivery of the dual-channel version of the Jawa bikes will happen in July.

Currently, Jawa offers two bikes in the market – Jawa and the Jawa 42 in the Indian market. Both the bikes are mechanically identical but look different from each other. Both the Jawa bikes offer front disc brake and rear drum brake as standard with single-channel ABS. Jawa also offers rear disc brake with dual-channel ABS in the market. The Jawa 42 single-channel ABS has priced at Rs 1.55 lakh while the dual-channel ABS version is priced at Rs 1.64 lakh. The Jawa single-channel ABS is priced at Rs 1.64 lakh and the dual-channel ABS version gets a sticker price of Rs 1.73 lakh.

Both the bikes are powered by the same engine option. It gets a 293cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine that generates a maximum of 27 Bhp and peak torque of 28 Nm. Jawa’s dispatch number shows a dismal 255 units dispatch last month instead of a large booking number. The brand has not revealed the pre-booking number officially but it is expected to be in thousands of numbers, which is why it will take so long to clear the backlog.
