Jawa 42 & Classic deliveries just 2 weeks away

Anupam Thareja, the Founder of Classic Legends – a company that’s brought back the Jawa brand to India – has confirmed that the first deliveries of the Jawa 42 and Classic motorcycle models will begin from the end of March 2019. This means that we’re just two weeks away from the first Jawa motorcycles reaching owners across the country.

Here’s what Anupam Thareja confirmed through his Twitter handle,

Classic Legends, in the meantime, has been on a Jawa dealership inauguration spree across the length and breadth of India. Almost a 100 new showrooms have come up across India, and all these showrooms will start deliveries of the retro styled motorcycles shortly.

The commencement of deliveries in March 2019 will end the long wait that owners who pre-booked the motorcycle as early as November 2018 have had to endure. Demand for the Jawa retro-styled motorcycles has been very strong, so much so that Classic Legends is contemplating closing bookings until the end of 2019 in some parts of India.

The Jawa 42 and Classic models share engines and mechanical bits, and the key difference between both motorcycles lie in their styling. While the Classic’s styling harks back to the time when Jawa used to sell two stroke motorcycles in India, the 42 is more of a retro-modern design to keep with the times.

The Classic has a big dollop of chrome, pinstriping and the trademark Jawa headlamp nacelle to capitalize on nostalgia. The 42, on the other hand, has unique styling such as an offset speedometer, cheery colours and a matte finish paint scheme.

Both motorcycles get the trademark, twin barrel exhaust that Jawas were famous for in the yesteryears, and also a raspy exhaust note. They also get a removable baffle that makes the exhaust sound quite rorty – a welcome change from the tame exhaust notes that most single cylinder four stroke motorcycles sold in India currently feature.

Talking of the engine, it’s the same unit that powers the Mojo but with significant re-engineering to get the ‘character and feel’ right on retro motorcycles. It’s a 292cc, single cylinder four stroke unit with a four valve head, twin overhead camshafts and fuel injection. This motor makes 27 Bhp of peak power and 28 Nm of peak torque.

The gearbox is a 6 speed manual unit. Both the Jawa 42 and Classic motorcycles get telescopic front forks, twin gas charged shock absorbers, a disc brake on the front wheel and a drum brake at the rear. While single channel ABS is standard, Jawa will offer dual channel ABS from July 2019. We look forward to the first Jawas to hit the Indian roads again.
