Classic Legends unveils engine which will power the new Jawa motorcycles

Classic Legends promises that the new 293cc single-cylinder engine is in line with the traditions of Jawa with its classic yet sporty nature

Classic motorcycle enthusiasts rejoice. Classic Legends has revealed the details of the engine that will be powering the upcoming Jawa branded motorcycles.

It is a 293cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled DOHC motor and before you dismiss it to be the same as the Mojo’s, let me stop you right there. See, the new Jawa motor may bear traces of the Mojo’s 295cc mill but the aesthetics are quite different. And so are the numbers. It packs 27bhp and 28Nm. Mahindra claims that the motor will be extremely tractable thanks to a flat torque curve and bear good mid-range grunt. The engine will adhere to the current emission norms as well as meets the requirements for BS VI norms.

The fins may deceive you but the engine is liquid-cooled. Like Jawa’s traditions of twin-port exhausts, this engine too possess a dual exhaust with classically styled headers and a pea-shooter styled end can layout. Traditionally the Jawas used to be two-stroke. But since stringent emission norms has made it impossible to make a two-stroker any longer, the new engine has to be a four-stroke. Mahindra wanted to retain the iconic sound note that distinguished the Jawa from the rest and in doing so have worked with a team of sound engineers to produce an exhaust note as close to the original one.

Mahindra has consciously spent time and effort into making the motor as in line with the Jawa DNA of appealing to an old school sporty natured rider, a rider who saw the Jawa in its heyday winning the races at Lohegaon, Juhu and Sholavaram race meets. They had their tech centres in Varese, Italy as well as in Chinchwad (outskirts of Pune), India working tirelessly. The testing and validation of the engine took place in Italy while the development took place in the country. The engines will be made at their outfit in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh.

There will be different dealers for the Jawa brand and there are already several dealers in place who have put their trust in the Jawa name despite them not being given any clues regarding the engine or the bike. The dealership will not be shared with the existing Mahindra 2 Wheelers ones as Mahindra wants Jawa to be a separate identity in itself.

Now that the first piece of the jigsaw puzzle has come into place, all indications point towards the Jawa motorcycle being of the neo-retro genre. We cannot wait to get a glimpse of the new motorcycle (or motorcycles) soon enough.
