The long wait finally ended today with the official launch of the new generation Jawa motorcycles in India by Mahindra's Classic Legends. Jawa motorcycles have been launched in three models - Jawa, Jawa forty two and Jawa Perak.

The new bike has been named after the brand and christened Jawa and it has been priced at Rs 1.64 lakh. Jawa also showcased the Type Forty Two which has been priced at Rs 1.55 lakh (all prices are ex-showroom, Delhi).

Mr Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group said, "It's rare to get an opportunity to resurrect a legend. Jawa is an authentic and iconic brand that represents the desire and yearning in all of us for freedom and adventure.”

The classic variant is called Jawa (in red), then there is Jawa 42 (in white), and the bobber custom is called Jawa Perak. The first two will be launched by Feb 2019, the custom bobber will be launched later in 2019.

The first models to go on sale will be the Jawa and Jawa 42. These are retro motorcycles, based on the same platform, powered by the same engine, but designed to attract a different set of buyers.

Mr Anupam Thareja, Founder, Classic Legends Pvt. Ltd. and Founder and Managing Partner, Phi Capital, said, “Jawa Motorcycles has enjoyed a huge fan following and generations have relished riding these iconic motorcycles. Modern classics are becoming more and more popular since people today are looking for character, style and fun. We are excited about the new Jawa Motorcycles that we have unveiled here today.”

Jawa will be available in 3 colour options while the Jawa 42 will be available in 6 colour options. Features include rounded headlamps, dual tone chrome finish on fuel tanks, twin exhausts and a flat saddle. Chain cover, wire spoked wheels and a circular instrument cluster could also be a part of its features. All Jawa motorcycles will be powered by a 293cc single cylinder, fuel injected, liquid cooled engine that offers 27 hp power and 28 Nm torque. It shares its bore and stroke with the Mahindra Mojo, but otherwise has been developed from scratch and gets mated to a 5-speed transmission.

Mr Boman Irani, Chairman & Managing Director, Rustomjee Group said, ‘It is a proud moment for me and my family that Jawa Motorcycles is making a comeback. The brand was first introduced in the country by my father and went on to define an era that not just pervaded a motorcycle cult but also popular culture & cinema that got the nation together. We are certain that Jawa will receive as much love as it had got in the past and will appeal to the seasoned motorcycles aficionados and the millennials alike.”

Mr Ashish Joshi, Chief Executive Officer, Classic Legends Pvt. Ltd. said, “It is indeed a historic moment and we are happy to bring Jawa back in India. This seems like the right timing to have come up with this range of motorcycles, as the Indian premium motorcycle market is not only growing but also evolving in consumer tastes and preferences. We are quite upbeat to offer these classics to the motorcycle enthusiasts in the country.”

It has gas charged twin shock absorbers at the rear and telescopic forks in the front. Braking is via a front disc brake and drum brake at the rear. Single channel ABS is standard. Apart from these two, there are multiple variants that could be launched in the future. These include a roadster and a scrambler version. It will carry forward several styling cues from the original Jawa models. Jawa motorcycles will compete directly with Royal Enfield Classic 350.
